About
Once alive with the clatter of horse-drawn carriages, deliveries of Parisian gowns, and the bustle of New York commerce, The Altman Building now hosts some of the world’s premier events, most influential names, and respected brands. Its story begins with Benjamin Altman, the son of Bavarian-Jewish immigrants, born in Manhattan in 1840. In 1865, he founded B. Altman & Company, a dry-goods store that grew into one of New York’s most celebrated department stores. By 1896, soaring demand led Altman to commission famed architects Kimball and Thompson to design a grand Renaissance Revival carriage house. The result was breathtaking—125 feet wide, five stories high, and graced with vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, and stately bay doors. The Altman Building is more than a venue—it’s a legacy, a stage, and a partner in bringing extraordinary visions to life.
